Spec. 001 — Muriel

Support

Muriel tracks how much noise you take in over a day and tells you when you've had your fill. It reads sound levels from the microphone while it's running, and environmental and headphone levels from Apple Health.

Common questions

Why is my dose so high after one gig?
Because the scale is exponential. Every 3 dB doubles the rate of damage and halves your safe time, so a loud room runs through a day's allowance far faster than it feels like it should. That's the NIOSH model working as intended, not a bug.
Can I use this as a sound level meter for work?
No. Muriel isn't calibrated and isn't a legal instrument. It's good enough to tell "this is fine" from "this is doing damage," which is the decision that actually matters — but it won't settle a workplace dispute.
Muriel isn't seeing my headphone levels.
Headphone audio levels come from Apple Health, and Health has to be allowed to share them. Check Health, then Sharing, then Apps, and make sure Muriel is allowed to read Headphone Audio Levels and Environmental Sound Levels.
Does it need to be open to measure?
For live microphone measurement, yes. The Apple Health side fills in what your phone and headphones recorded while Muriel wasn't running, which is most of an ordinary day.
How do I delete my data?
Delete the app. Everything Muriel stored goes with it, because none of it was anywhere else. Anything written by Apple Health is removed in the Health app, which is under your control rather than mine.
